Papers of the Wiant family [manuscript], 1780-1970, 1969-1972.

This collection contains the genealogy of the Wiant family of Virginia and Ohio and related biographical material. Included are "Wiant Family Genealogy, 1782-1970" (46 leaves) and its companion volume "Wiant Family Biographies" (74 leaves) both compiled by Rena Wiant Prather and Gertrude Wiant Stickley. The Wiant genealogy, an indexed outline, contains the names and dates of American Wiants, beginning with John Weygandt who emigrated to Albemarle County, Va. from Germany about 1776. He and his wife Mary had 8 children, 5 of whom later pioneered in Champaign County, OH. The Wiant biography volume details the lives of these eight children and their descendents as listed in the genealogy. Also included are family photographs and photographs of the family estate "Pleasant Retreat" in Albemarle County as well as copies of Bible records, deeds, wills, letters, and maps. There is also a biographical sketch of playwright Cary Franklin Jacob written by Marion Wiant Burfoot.
